CSAS organized a Webinar on "The Impact of Artificial Intelligence Tools on Academic Writing Practices"


Centre for South Asian Studies (CSAS), University of the Punjab, Lahore organized a seminar on May 29, 2024. Dr. Aamir Arsalan, Assistant Professor, Department of Software Engineering at Fatima Jinnah Women University, Rawalpindi was the guest speaker at the occasion. The topic of his discussion was, "The Impact of Artificial Intelligence Tools on Academic Writing Practices". The guest speaker started discussion by asking a question from the participants regarding their expectations from AI tools for academic writings. Dr. Aamir explained how to find references for a generated text. He also talked about the Connected Papers- a visual tool that helps researchers and academics explore and understand the text and development of scientific papers through a graph of related studies. Then he illustrated about Consensus GPT that serves as an AI Research Assistant, Scholar GPT which provides scholarly research assistance and Literature Review GPT.
In the end, the Guest Speaker elucidated the issue of research ethics while using AI and misconceptions about that which has hampered individual's creativity and novelty. Student's queries about AI tools utilization in academic research were thoroughly addressed by the speaker during long discussion of Q & A. At the end, it was submitted by the speaker that AI is not an alternative to human creativity. A large number of Undergrad, M.Phil & PhD students from different departments attended the session.
